The Heartland Initiative is a regional effort to engage men and boys in strengthening leadership, belonging, and human connection across the Midwest, Appalachia, and the Upper South. Through innovative engagement strategies, leadership development, organizational partnerships, community experiences, and research, we are building a regional ecosystem that strengthens individuals, organizations, and communities.
Our vision is to make the Heartland a leading regional model for engaging men and boys, developing stronger leaders, and cultivating healthier, more connected communities.

The Opportunity
What if the Midwest became the nation's proving ground for engaging men and boys?
The Heartland Initiative is a long-term effort to engage men and boys in strengthening leadership, trust, and human connection across the organizations and communities that protect, build, and serve the Heartland. Beginning in Southwest Ohio and expanding across the Midwest and Appalachia, the Initiative brings together innovative engagement strategies, leadership development, research, higher education, practitioner development, and community partnerships to build a regional model for strengthening the people and institutions at the heart of the region.
Begin with Systems Shaping Men
Men and boys do not experience identity, belonging, purpose, or responsibility in isolation. Their lives are shaped by the systems in which they live, work, learn, worship, serve, and gather, including families, schools, faith communities, workplaces, public institutions, civic organizations, and the regional economy.
Across the Heartland, these systems carry deep traditions of service, craftsmanship, faith, resilience, responsibility, and the dignity of work. They can create powerful pathways to connection and contribution, but they can also reinforce isolation, mistrust, and expectations that leave little room for struggle, reflection, or change.
Unspoken Heartland works at the intersection of men, place, and systems. It listens to men’s lived experiences while helping the institutions around them build trust, strengthen relationships, and respond more effectively. Public safety, military and veteran communities, manufacturing, skilled trades, energy, utilities, construction, and infrastructure are especially important settings within this broader ecosystem. These warrior cultures ask a great deal of the men within them, and they are places where leadership, trust, responsibility, and human connection carry significant consequences.
A central question guides these efforts: What becomes possible when we engage the hardest-to-reach men within the hardest-to-access systems? Listening and learning in these settings can reveal underlying realities that are not always visible from the outside. Unspoken Heartland translates those insights into culturally credible approaches that can strengthen the engagement of men and boys across communities, institutions, and cultures.
By engaging men where they already live, work, worship, serve, and gather, Unspoken Heartland seeks to create change that extends beyond any individual program or institution. Strengthening men and the systems around them can strengthen the families, organizations, and communities they help sustain.
Why the Heartland Matters
The Heartland is uniquely positioned to become the nation's leading model for engaging men and boys.
No other region brings together the same concentration of manufacturing, skilled trades, military and veteran communities, law enforcement and first responders, energy, agriculture, Fortune 500 companies, faith communities, colleges and universities, and civic institutions. Together, these communities reflect many of the opportunities and challenges shaping the lives of men and boys today, while sharing deep traditions of work, service, responsibility, and resilience.
Beginning in Southwest Ohio, the Heartland Initiative will expand through a deliberate, phased strategy designed to build strong local partnerships before extending across the Midwest and Appalachia.

The Men of the Heartland Research Study brings together university partners, applied research, and community listening to understand men’s lived experiences and identify what helps men engage across the region.

Partnering with public safety agencies, military and veteran organizations, manufacturers, utilities, universities, faith communities, and civic institutions to strengthen leadership and culture across the region.

Bringing together men, community leaders, practitioners, researchers, organizations, and regional partners through the Men of the Heartland Summit to share learning, strengthen relationships, exchange promising practices, and turn local insight into coordinated regional action.

Community Engagement
Creating opportunities for men, leaders, and communities to build authentic connection through Heartland Men’s Adventures, The INQUIRY Men’s Circles, spiritual retreats, white water rafting adventures, regional gatherings, and service projects.

Helping leaders build cultures of trust, accountability, resilience, and bridge building through consulting, retreats, executive coaching, and M-LABB leadership experiences.

Developing coaches, facilitators, chaplains, bridge builders, and organizational practitioners through The Warrior's Counsel and facilitator development initiatives.

We envision a Heartland where men and boys are equipped to lead with courage, purpose, compassion, and integrity in every sector of society. By strengthening the people who protect, build, teach, serve, and lead our communities, we strengthen the organizations, families, and communities they call home.
Across the Midwest, Appalachia, and the Upper South, we believe the Heartland can become a model for engaging men and boys that the nation can learn from. By connecting men, community leaders, universities, researchers, practitioners, and organizations, we are building a regional network rooted in leadership, belonging, trust, and human flourishing.
Together, we listen to men’s lived experiences, draw on what the broader field has learned, and develop approaches that make sense within the places men live, work, worship, and serve. We equip trusted local leaders to create opportunities for men and boys to deepen purpose, strengthen relationships, and contribute more fully to family, work, and community.
As trust grows, partners learn from one another, share what works, and become better equipped to address challenges they cannot solve alone. What begins in the Heartland has the potential to strengthen men’s work across the country.
