The Heartland Initiative is a regional effort to engage men and boys in strengthening leadership, belonging, and human connection across the Midwest and Appalachia. Through innovative engagement strategies, leadership development, organizational partnerships, community experiences, and research, we are building a regional ecosystem that strengthens individuals, organizations, and communities.
Our vision is to make the Heartland the nation's leading model for engaging men and boys, developing stronger leaders, and cultivating healthier, more connected communities.

The Opportunity
What if the Midwest became the nation's proving ground for engaging men and boys?
The Heartland Initiative is a long-term effort to engage men and boys in strengthening leadership, trust, and human connection across the organizations and communities that protect, build, and serve the Heartland. Beginning in Southwest Ohio and expanding across the Midwest and Appalachia, the Initiative brings together innovative engagement strategies, leadership development, research, higher education, practitioner development, and community partnerships to build a regional model for strengthening the people and institutions at the heart of the region.
Why Start with Warrior Cultures
Many men across the Heartland live, work, and lead within the organizations entrusted with protecting, building, and sustaining society. These include law enforcement, military and veteran communities, first responders, corrections, manufacturing, skilled trades, energy and utilities, construction, infrastructure, and other mission-driven organizations.
These cultures are built around service, responsibility, discipline, craftsmanship, and mission. They ask extraordinary things of the people within them and play a vital role in the health, safety, and prosperity of our communities.
Because these environments often place performance ahead of personal struggle, they can become some of the hardest places for men to explore questions of identity, belonging, purpose, relationships, and wellbeing. Yet they are also among the places where leadership, trust, and human connection matter most.
Warrior cultures do not exist in isolation. They are deeply connected to the families, schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, faith communities, and civic institutions that shape life across the Heartland. Strengthening the men who serve within these environments creates ripple effects that extend far beyond the workplace, strengthening families, organizations, and communities throughout the region.
For that reason, warrior cultures are one of the Heartland Initiative's primary starting points, not its final destination. By engaging men where they live, work, and serve, we believe meaningful change can spread outward across the broader ecosystem of the Heartland.
Why the Heartland Matters
The Heartland is uniquely positioned to become the nation's leading model for engaging men and boys.
No other region brings together the same concentration of manufacturing, skilled trades, military and veteran communities, law enforcement and first responders, energy, agriculture, Fortune 500 companies, faith communities, colleges and universities, and civic institutions. Together, these communities reflect many of the opportunities and challenges shaping the lives of men and boys today, while sharing deep traditions of work, service, responsibility, and resilience.
Beginning in Southwest Ohio, the Heartland Initiative will expand through a deliberate, phased strategy designed to build strong local partnerships before extending across the Midwest and Appalachia.

Creating opportunities for men, leaders, and communities to build authentic connection through Men's Soul Adventures, The INQUIRY Men’s Circles, spiritual retreats, white water rafting adventures, regional gatherings, and service projects.

Helping leaders build cultures of trust, accountability, resilience, and bridge building through consulting, retreats, executive coaching, and M-LABB leadership experiences.

Partnering with public safety agencies, military and veteran organizations, manufacturers, utilities, universities, faith communities, and civic institutions to strengthen leadership and culture across the region.

Advancing the field through university partnerships, applied research, curriculum development, and documenting what works in warrior and command cultures.

Developing coaches, facilitators, chaplains, bridge builders, and organizational practitioners through The Warrior's Counsel and facilitator development initiatives.

Connecting leaders, organizations, and communities across the Heartland so ideas, relationships, and best practices strengthen the entire region rather than remaining isolated within individual organizations.
Our Vision for the Heartland
We envision a Heartland where men and boys are equipped to lead with courage, purpose, compassion, and integrity in every sector of society. By strengthening the people who protect, build, teach, serve, and lead our communities, we strengthen the organizations, families, and communities they call home.
Across the Midwest, Appalachia, and the Upper South, we believe the Heartland can become the nation's leading model for engaging men and boys. By connecting leaders, organizations, universities, practitioners, and communities, we are building a regional ecosystem rooted in leadership, belonging, trust, and human flourishing.
Through culturally credible opportunities to deepen purpose, strengthen relationships, and contribute more fully to family, work, and community, men and boys become catalysts for stronger organizations, healthier communities, and a more connected region.
As trust grows, partnerships deepen, organizations learn from one another, and communities become better equipped to navigate the challenges they cannot solve alone.
What begins in the Heartland has the potential to inspire a new model for engaging men and boys across the country.
